Can you imagine firing S+ actions via actual hand gestures? I've pre-ordered a unit and applied for an SDK.

Keep your fingers crossed they'll send me one (the SDK, which appears to be sooner than general release)!

Yeah, I have just watched that video, came across it perhaps an hour ago. I have been waiting for this technology to mature for a couple of years; however, I think it is mostly useful in creative design and gaming, not in regular computer use (yet).

For one thing, I don't think people want to hold their arms up in the air for hours. And you would either need to move your hand for over half a metre for every command or be imprecise. As for mouse gestures, how are you going to click on a things (like hyperlinks) with your hands? You would need to switch between hands and mouse all the time? How do you think it could be useful?

I think I once saw a demonstration of a similar scientific project, where they manipulated a 3D projection: that might make it more useful. Still, it is a great new thing, and it will probably give us some great new stuff in the future.

Oh I don't mean for general computer use, there's no practical use case for anyone waving their hands around in the air for any extended period of time.

I'm thinking more along the lines of utility systems like a media box where the Leap unit is on the end table next to the couch; flick of the finger to change tracks, etc. Kiosk systems, home automation. Nothing really core to the main functionality of S+, but would be a fun separate project for automation of other types of systems; apparently they will have a Leap App store, maybe I'll make something over there and put it up for sale.

It's not something I've really thought through yet, but the potential is there...and I think we're going to see a lot of Leap-enabled things 5-10 years down the road. I could be wrong, but I'm usually pretty dismissive of fad tech and this one instantly struck me as something that's going to stick, especially with the precision and price point (plus they're already funded).

This was mostly an "I'm really excited at the possibilities of this! Not necessarily how it directly ties to s+, though." kind of post.

Oh, yes, I agree! It could be very useful in situations where you would exclusively carry out S+ gestures or scroll the mouse, i.e. where you would not have to use the mouse to click at specific locations around the same time. A media centre or game would be a great application to start. Leaning back to read a PDF and waving your hand to flick through the pages would be useful too (perhaps a standard e-reader application would be a good thing to develop). And any kind of scrolling in general.

Talking about Very Cool Things With Gestures, do you know Microsoft's OmniTouch? It is not quite ready for casual use, as it involves a fairly large camera mounted on your shoulder; but it can do very cool things (see video), and I trust that the camera-projector-computer can be miniaturized and mounted somewhere non-obtrusive.

Let's be honest here, the porn viewing convenience possibilities are staggering! =)

(the OmniTouch is a pretty neat concept, but feels iffy)

Oh, heh I actually hadn't thought of that, but I imagine some sort of interactive game could service people.
